For people who are looking for ways to reduce their "carbon footprint," here's one radical idea that could have a big long-term impact, some scientists say: Have fewer kids.
A study by statisticians at Oregon State University concluded that in the United States, the carbon legacy and greenhouse gas impact of an extra child is almost 20 times more important than some of the other environment-friendly practices people might employ during their entire lives - things like driving a high mileage car, recycling, or using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs.
"In discussions about climate change, we tend to focus on the carbon emissions of an individual over his or her lifetime," said study team member Paul Murtaugh. "Those are important issues and it's essential that they should be considered. But an added challenge facing us is continuing population growth and increasing global consumption of resources."
Reproductive choices haven't gained as much attention in the consideration of human impact to the Earth, Murtaugh said. When an individual produces a child - and that child potentially produces more descendants in the future - the effect on the environment can be many times the impact produced by a person during their lifetime.

Happy Things
I am feeling very fortunate today...
Last night's dinner - the most amazing grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had - Daiya cheddar shreds with CSA tomato.
We live in a tiny town. Really tiny - the only businesses we have on the main drag are the post office, a tiny grocery/liquor store, and a butcher (yay! not.) - so a new business opening up is kind of exciting, and we just got a new bakery. I stopped there for the first time this morning and bought a loaf of sourdough. Isn't it adorable?Thursday, August 27, 2009
What's Old is New Again
This is the first in what I hope will be a regular series of posts highlighting antique and vintage jewelry finds on the net. I am hopelessly smitten by antique jewelry, partly because of its obvious beauty, but also because 're-used' jewelry is just about as green as it gets! You can click on the text links below to see more images, details, and prices for each piece.

New Work
Fair trade Zultanite and 14k recycled white gold ring, size 7I love Zultanite so much! I think it makes for a really unique alternative to diamonds or moissanite for a wedding ring.
This one isn't quite finished yet (the stone hasn't been set; it's just temporarily perched atop the bezel) but I thought I'd share it with you all anyways. It's in its second incarnation (original here), and I like this re-worked version so much more than my first attempt. I've given it a heavier, tapered handmade bezel, and I've narrowed the band down in front to meet the new, narrower base of the bezel.

The County Fair
I've long since sworn off of zoos and circuses with animal acts, and yet, when the fair comes to town, I feel compelled to take Carlos. I have mixed feelings about the fair. One one hand, it seems like such an all-American classic summertime activity - a fun way to spend an afternoon as a family - but on the other hand, there's this...

... beautiful animals, well cared for by (one would assume) reasonably caring and well-meaning adults and children - displayed with pride, and for may people, I daresay love. And yet subjected to indignities and cruelties like painful horn removal, I'm sure without anesthetic.

Ouch. And worse yet, so many of these animals will soon go to auction and slaughter. I will never be able to understand the dissonance inherent in this situation. These 4-H/FFA kids spend huge amounts of time taking really good care of their animals, learning lessons about selflessness and responsibility, growing attached to their charges and experiencing the joy of inter-species relationships, only to be forced to learn the 'ultimate lesson' that none of this matters - that it's okay to betray a friend - that it's necessary to inflict pain and suffering on others in order to become a mature, responsible adult. It's incredibly sad, and I just don't get it.
Marji at Animal Place posted a great article on this subject the other day if you'd like to read more.
I beg to differ.

I beg to differ. The whole atmosphere of the fair is disconcerting to me. I feel like even my choice of attire is a loaded issue - if I wear my usual animal rights themed t-shirts, would I get weird looks? or perhaps even rude comments? Even my 'love animals / don't eat them' bumper sticker makes me wonder if my car might get keyed in the parking lot. Weird thoughts to be having at a festive place like the fair, right?
So what do you think, fellow animal activists - do you go to the fair when it comes to your town? I'm especially interested to hear from folks with kids. Am I exposing Carlos to a harmless afternoon of fun, or am I subtly showing him that it's okay to exploit animals?

New Work
First off, a ginormous (8mm) deep red Oregon sunstone ring. This gorgeous stone is set in white gold. Size 6.
{ to be listed soon in my Etsy shop }
And here, I've tried something new for a custom order; in order for this narrow-banded engagement ring to sit flush on the floral wedding band, I notched the wedding band. I think it turned out rather nice...Sunday, August 9, 2009

New Stones!!!
I am quite excited - I got some new stones yesterday - not just new pieces of the same things I've always had (well, yes, some of those too), but some new types of stones that I've never worked with before.
I'm 100% committed to using exclusively fair trade/ethical stones, but since I officially made that transition a few months ago, I have missed that wonderful feeling of discovery that comes with finding new stones to work with. Well, thanks to my awesome vendors, I'm riding a new-stone high once again. :-) Now I just have to find time to add the new ones to my fair trade stone directory.

Strawberry Watermelon Popsicles

Strawberry Watermelon Popsicles
2 cups chopped watermelon
1 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen
1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice
2-4 tablespoons sugar or other sweetener, optional
Combine all ingredients in blender and process until smooth. Pour into popsicle molds* and freeze.
* I used these, and had just a bit of liquid left over.
Whole Grain White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies

Don't let the whole grain fool you - these puppies are sweet and rich enough to satisfy even the most ravenous sweet tooth (i.e., mine).
Whole Grain White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies
(a healthier take on 'Big Gigantoid Crunchy Peanut Butter-Oatmeal Cookies' from Vegan With a Vengeance
2 cups flour (I used white whole wheat flour)
2 cups rolled oats
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons canola oil
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
3/4 cup peanut butter (I used chunky, but either will work)
3/4 - 1 cup sugar, to taste
3/4 - 1 cup brown sugar, to taste
1/2 cup non-dairy milk (I used vanilla soy milk)
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup vegan white chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium-large bowl, stir together dry ingredients (flour, oats, baking powder, and salt). In a separate large bowl, combine wet ingredients (canola oil through vanilla). Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir to combine well. Add in white chocolate chips and mix until incorporated. Scoop onto greased cookie sheets, flatten slightly, and bake for 12 minutes, or until lightly browned around the edges.

I had to have some help with this one; I'm not so good at setting square stones yet, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

July Jewelry For Charity Update & August Kick-Off

Once again, here I am to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who bought jewelry from me during the month of July. Your kind patronage helped me have a very successful month, and you know what that means - more money to donate to Animal Place! I just wrote a check for $550 in support of Animal Place's brand new property purchase. Few things make me as happy as being able to help such a worthy organization, and I truly can't do it without your help. So seriously, thank you.

July's donation brings me to a total of $11,626 in donations since I began my Jewelry for Charity program in May 2007.
Up for August, we have one of my perennial favorites, WINGS Guatemala. WINGS creates opportunities for Guatemalan families to improve their lives by providing them with family planning education and access to reproductive health services. 5% of any purchases that you make, either through my Etsy shop or elsewhere, will be donated to this awesome organization.

Here's one of many success stories from the WINGS website -
Wilfredo is 38 years old and lives in a small city in the southern Guatemalan province of Escuintla.
He works as a volunteer nurse, and also runs a pharmacy and a barbershop. Last year, Wilfredo participated in the men’s workshops that WINGS provided in his community. He felt that the information covered in the workshops was so important that when the workshops ended he volunteered to become a WINGS for Men peer educator.
Wilfredo was trained by WINGS as an educator in January 2009. He is now working in his community to distribute information about reproductive health, family planning methods, and sexually-transmitted infections, while also selling condoms at a reduced rate.
Last month he helped a young man with a sexually-transmitted infection find a clinic where he could receive treatment and provided him with information about prevention so that he would be protected in the future.
Throughout 2009, WINGS for Men will be training additional peer educators like Wilfredo who are committed to helping their communities through reproductive health education.
