Oooh, I'm liking the green tourmaline!!! Perhaps that is what I will go with....
If a gem is from California, how can you claim "fair trade," since fair trade is premised on the economic relationships between developed and developing world countries?
That's an interesting distinction, and honestly one that I now feel that I haven't given enough thought to!
In my own mind, I think of 'fair trade' as interchangeable with 'ethical', but you're probably right - they really aren't necessarily the same thing. A stone can be ethically sourced domestically, but that may not make it fair trade, depending on how you choose to define fair trade. (There seems to be no single, universally accepted definition.)
I'll have to ponder that a bit.
